Objectives: SWBAT: -Distinguish between Vertebrates and Invertebrates
by stating the proper criteria that places each animal
into their groups.
- List examples of both groups

of a animal from each group

a back bone on any vertebrate.
Materials: Geometric shapes, stuffed animals and insects, shells, posters, and science folder.
Prompt: Discussion about different methods of grouping items using geometric
shapes.
Procedure: - Students will read pp. 30-31 of science book.
- Teacher will start discussion.
According to your reading, scientists group animals into
2 groups.
What are these 2 groups?
(Animals w/ back bones or vertebrates &
Animals w/o back bones, or invertebrates).
What’s a back bone? Feel your own.
What does your back bone do for you? ( Stand straight,
bend)
- Have students give examples
of vert/invert.
Put posters and write answers on the board as students
say them.
Closure: - Show students examples, have them tell
you what column they go in.
Do all these animals look alike?
How are they different? How are they the same?
