Topic: Land Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 minutes
Materials: Answers to the Throw Away Quiz transparency, Landfill Factoids transparency and of world populations growth.
Objectives: 1. Students will justify their predictions on the
Throw Away Quiz.
2. Students will recognize facts of landfills and amounts of
pollution they contain.
3. Students will predict and write the effects of pollution in
years to come.
4. Students will develop a plan on ways to reduce land pollution.
Procedures: 1. Students will be given the answers to the Throw
Away quiz by volunteering their answers, being shown the correct
answers and having a class discussion on why. (5 minutes)
2. Students will be asked to predict answers to questions based
of the landfill factoid sheet on a scrap paper. (1. How many
pounds of solid waste does a college students produce? (2.
How many 1,000 landfill do you think the U.S. had in 1992?
(3. Make a bar graph demonstrating these figures (write on the
board) 67% in 1992, 81% in 1980, and 62% in 1960. The answers to these
questions will be given by various volunteers and the graph will be drawn
on the board by a volunteer. Then the answers will be
shown on the overhead.
3. The transparency of world population will be shown.
The teacher will read highlighted sections from Land Pollution(sheet
included). Based on this information, students
will write their predictions of what will happen to the world's
waste as the population continues to increase. They will also write
what can be done to stop this problem. (15 minutes)
Assessment: 1. Students will be given a check plus, check minus, or check on their writings of predictions and ways to solve the pollution problem. Students will need to come up with realistic ideas and use explanations for their solutions.
