Topic: Land Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 Minutes
Materials: Cartoon, Throw Away Quiz, definition transparency, graph transparency and copies of one person's waste per year.
Objectives:
1. Students will predict, based on their knowledge, the answers to
the throw away quiz.
2. Students will be able to define terms relating to land pollution.
3. Students will be able to show their understanding of graphs.
4. Students will analyze material on a graph.
Procedures:
1. The cartoon will be shown on the overhead. Students
will be involved in a class discussion on the meaning of the
cartoon. (2 minutes)
2. The students will complete a throw away quiz. This will be
completed individually. ( 5 minutes)
3. Students will copy the definitions of land pollution into
their notebooks from the overhead. (8 minutes) Copies will
be available for those who do not finish.
4. Students will be introduced to bar graphs and circle graphs
on the board using the same figures. This will show the
students that two types of graphs can be used to represent
the same figures. (5 minutes)
5. Students will be shown the graph transparency. Each
student will translate one of the graph's information into
a bar graph.(10 minutes)
6. In groups of four students will take the information from
one person's waste a year on the overhead and make either a
line or bar graph. ( 10 minutes)
7. The answers to the throw away quiz will be discussed the next
day.
Assessment: 1. The students will be given a grade for their individual
graphs. Each students should clearly show a bar graph
using the results of the pie graph shown.
2. A group grade will be given for the graph produced in groups.
Each graph should include the correct information, translation
and should be neat.
