Topic: Air Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 Minutes
Materials: Cartoon transparency, S.O.S. Planet Earth Air Scare book, Scavenger Hunt materials or locations to find the materials outdoors.
Objectives
: 1. Students will be able to list different types of air pollution
and effects.
2. Students will be able to describe three types of air pollution
and give examples.
3. Students will be able to classify different things found in
the community and relate them to air pollution.
4. Students will write how materials in nature connect with air
and/or pollution.
Procedures: 1. Show the class the cartoon on the overhead.
A class discussion will be held on the meaning of the cartoon
and what is air pollution?(5 minutes)
2. As a class we will read excerpts from S.O.S. Planet Earth
book. Excerpts will include Ozone layer, greenhouse effect
and acid rain. (10 minutes)
3. The class will break up into teams of three or four.
Students will go outside (weather permitting) and have time
to gather materials for the scavenger hunt. (15 minutes)
4. The students will then connect the items from the scavenger
hunt to natural resources. Students will write what they
found, how it relates to the environment and the effects of
pollution. (10 minutes)
Assessment: 1. Kid Watching- students will be given a participation
grade for contributing to the scavenger hunt group activity.
2. Students will be given a check plus, check, or check minus
for their written findings to the scavenger hunt and relations
to the environment and pollution.
