DAY 3

Topic: Water Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 Minutes

Materials:  Darby Duck activity supplies and computers with Compton's Encyclopedia loaded.
                   Tree Puzzle worksheets.

Objectives:
1.  Students will demonstrate water pollution effects through the Darby Duck   Activity.
2.  Students will write the effects of water pollution in reguards to the Darby   Duck activity.
3.  Students will predict the effects of water pollution.
4.  Students will justify their predictions with the information found on   Compton's Encyclopedia.

Procedures: 1.  Share the information on the fines given to Exxon from their oil spill in   1989. Why was this fine so high? (2 minutes)
2.  Students will predict the effects of water pollution and the major causes.  A   classlist will be made.(5 minutes)
3.  Students will be put into groups of four.  Each group will be assigned a   number between 1-6.  There will be three centers for both Compton's and the   Darby Duck activity.(3 minutes)
4.  The groups will perform the activities at each center and then rotate.  Ten   minutes are allowed at each center. (20 minutes)
5.  The location for Compton's is "Water Pollution".  The groups will explore   this site and write a summary of what they found. They will also write a   summary from the results of the Darby Duck activity.
6.  Students will write their predictions and justify them with the results from   the two activities.(10 minutes).
7.  The students will have the tree puzzle for homework or to finish in class.

Assessment: 1.  Kid Watching- Students will be given partcipation checks for following   directions and activities.
2.  A grade will be given to each group for their summaries of the learning   centers.  This will be determined by the information found, detailed reports,   and correct findings in the Darby activity.
3.  An individual grade will be given to the students for their justification of   predicitions.  The student must address the prediction and justify if it is true.    If the prediction is false then they must say why and give facts to support it   from the learning centers.
