Topic: Water Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 Minutes
Materials: Cartoon, materials for Darby Duck activity, Story on water pollution.
Objectives:
1. Students will demonstrate their understanding of water pollution
by performing the Darby Duck activity.
2. Students will write their results of the Darby Duck activity.
3. Students will determine the effects of water pollution from
their activity results.
Procedures: 1. Students will be shown a cartoon on water pollution
and a class discussion will be held on what the cartoon means.
Students will offer their thoughts and ideas in a class discussion.
(2 minutes)
2. The class will listen to a story about water pollution called
Oil Spill by Melvin Berger. (5 minutes)
3. Show a transparency of oil spills to show the frequency of
the occurrence and the amount of oil spilled into the water.
This is just to get the students to think about how much oil
is released into the water at the time of a spill.

4. Students will break up into groups of four or five. Each group
will get the materials for the Darby Duck activity after the
procedures are discussed. Procedures: 1. Carefully follow the
directions to do the activity. 2. Have a recorder, shaker,
measurer, cleaner and time keeper if five members. 3. Answer
questions when finished as a group and turn them in. (20 minutes)
5. As a class we will discuss what happened and talk about other
examples. Tell students about the major oil spills and statistics.

Assessment: 1. Kid watching- is the group on task, is everyone
performing their position?
A participation check.
2. Group questions will be assessed by the understanding
of the activity and the results that the group comes up with.
