Topic: Pollution
Grade: Sixth
Time: 40 Minutes
Materials: Video tape, Cause/Effect worksheets, Pollution notes (transparency)
Objectives:
1. Students will recognize what pollution is and three types.
2. Students will show the different Cause/Effect relationships on the
topic pollution.
3. Students will predict their own Cause/Effect relationships on pollution.
4. Students will write their predictions of the causes of pollution.
Procedures: 1. Students will watch an episode of Bill Nye the
science guy. (15 minutes)
2. As a class we will discuss what the video was about. (5 minutes)
3. Students will record notes off the overhead projector on pollution.
(5 min.)
4. Cause/Effect relationships will be introduced. The students
will break into groups of three or four. They will read each
side of the pollution argument on pollution effects.
As a group they will come up with their own viewpoint on pollution.
(15 minutes)
5. The students will return to their seats and complete a worksheet
on cause/effect relationships. This will be finished for homework.
Assessment: 1. Kid watching- Students will be given a participation
grade for working together in groups.
2. Students will be given a check plus, check, or check minus for their
group work on cause effect. This should reflect their understanding
of cause/effect relationships.
3. Students will be given a check plus, check, or check minus
for their homework sheet. This worksheet will determine
if the students have an understanding of cause/effect relationships.
