Course Description

Introduction to Computers (4 units). History of computers; hardware, software including , Windows,word processors, spreadsheets, and data base , programming languages; social and ethical implications.

Goals and Objectives

  • Provide the student with a introductory understanding of computer hardware and system software
  • Form a foundation of technical knowledge for Internet, MS Windows, etc.
  • Develop Microsoft Office knowledge
  • Develop good IS/IT knowledge

Requirements and Grading

  • 50 % of CIS100 Lab
  • 50% is from CIS100

Exams

There will be one mid-term and one comprehensive final exam.

Exams are closed book, closed notes, no computers. Topics to be on exams will be covered in class discussions and completely defined before each test.

Grades

Grades for the lab section will be assigned based on the following weights:

Letter grades will be assigned using the following scale:

Policies

Students are expected to attend every class session. Since Computer Hardware and Software concepts are presented during class time, class attendance is essential for successful completion of assignments and tests. Since a large part of the course involves work on Computer Hardware and Software, it is essential that you utilize the time in class for discussion and exercises on the computer and applications. If you don’t, you would not catch up the class and then you would fail. If attendance is not possible for one of the class meetings, please contact the instructor beforehand.

Students are expected to use the equipment of the computer labs at CSULA.

Students who have a strong background and experiences in Computer Hardware and Software and feel they do not need to attend should speak with the instructor and make special arrangements.

Late Work

Late work will not be accepted.
