Frequently Asked Questions:

What's the reason for the high percentage of funding going to the Student Composer Forum?

  • The Student Composer Forum currently does not receive funding through college or departmental resources. However the need for funding this project has increased as the population of student composers has expanded by leaps and bounds every year.

What do you mean by "supplemental professional musicians" and why are they needed?

  • The CSULA music department has an extraordinary pool of student musicians and every effort is made to use as many of these fine students as possible. They have performed well for their colleague composers and every one of them has enjoyed the experience immensely. On occasion, student composers require instruments not available in the student population, or require a large number of instruments which exceeds the availability of the student groups. For this reason, professionals are called in to supplement the student groups for rehearsals and performances.

Why does the New Music Ensemble rent music, I thought purchasing is cheaper?

  • The mission of the New Music Ensemble is to perform the works of composers active in the last 25 years and those composers who have had an impact on the music of today. Many of these composers' works are still under copyright and almost always under rental agreements with their publishers.  For example, our March 2005 concert featured works of Tan Dun and Charles Ives. The rental costs for these works exceeded $500, over 50% of the entire New Music Ensemble IRA funding.
