FIN 335 (Personal Portfolio and Risk Management) Course SYLLABUS


Course Objectives

(1) Explore the fundamentals of sound financial planning for one's desired life style; and
(2) Develop one's initial competence in financial counselling.
 

Prerequisite

Junior standing or above.

Course Text

Winger & Frasca, Personal Finance: An Integrated Apporoach, 5th Ed., Prentice-Hall..
 

 Class Meetings

Class is scheduled to meet two times per week on Thursday evenings  from 6:10 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  You are
expected to attend class, and unexcused absences will jeopardize your course grade. (Absence from any five
sessions will result in the loss of one grade letter.)

Examinations

Examination No. 1 will most likely cover Chapters 1 thru 4.  Examination No 2 will probably cover Chapters 5 thru 9.  .  Examination No. 3 (Final) will then likely cover Chapters 10 and 13 thru 18.

Each examination will consist of objective questions (true-false and multiple-choice), for which you are to use a Scan-Tron form 882-ES and a No. 2 pencil, and from one to three essay questions.  You will need a bluebook for each examination.

In an emergency, if it should be necessary to miss an examination at the scheduled time, it may be made up during the instructor's office hours provided it is done so within one week following the scheduled time, and provided the student receives permission from the instructor at or prior to the scheduled time.

After review of exams during class all exams must be returned to the instructor for filing.

Course Grades

Grades will be assigned on a percentage basis (90% or above is an "A", 80% or above is a "B", etc.). At the instrtuctor's discretion, grades may be curved at the end of the course.
 

Class Participation

Ten percent of each student's grade will be based upon the instructor's subjective evaluation of the student's participation
and contributions to course information through classroom discussion.  Such participation may consist partially of input
based on analysis and/or experience, and any reports the student may wish to make re current events and developments
in financial planning.

Personal Financial Plan

Each student, during the quarter, will develop and present in writing a personal plan for financial well-being, according to the student's personal goals and objectives, and using some or all of the principles studied in the course.  It is suggested, from a practical standpoint, that students may wish to approach the project from both a short-term and a long-term basis.  This term project will be discussed at various times throughout the course, and students are welcome to discuss their own viewpoints and efforts individually with the instructor.
 

Class Policies

(1)  Only "silent" beepers, and no active telephones, are permitted in the classroom.
(2) Tape recordisngs will be permitted, sbut only with the written permission of the instructor.  Inquire at the instructor's office for forrm.
(3) No unauthorized materials will be permitted isn the classroom during examination periods.  Examinations will be graded only on the basis of each student's individual performance.
