Prerequisites: Math 455 or equivalent.
Recommended Textbook: Dummit and Foote, Abstract Algebra, 3rd edition, Wiley ISBN-13: 978-0471433347. A lot of math for a reasonable price! You may be able to find a copy to download on the web. You may also want to make use of your old Math 455 textbook.
Course Material:
This course will give an introduction to the theory of groups, culminating
with the Sylow theorems. From the textbook, this is Chapters 1-5. Time
permitting, we will have a brief introduction to rings from Chapter 7.
Homework: I will assign homework most lectures. It will be due on the day of the following lecture -- not necessarily during lecture. You can email homework if needed. Late homework is not accepted. If you have a valid reason for missing a homework set, you need to discuss your situation with me. When I calculate your final grade I will drop the lowest homework score.
Exams: There will be a midterm exam and the final exam.
Midterm Exam: Thursday, October 29, at the
regular class meeting time and place.
Final Exam: Tuesday, December 8, 4:30-7pm
Grades:
Your final grade will be determined from the exams and quizzes with the
following weights:
Homework : 25%
Midterm exam: 25% each
Final exam: 50%
