INTRODUCTION
It was once a career goal and now a reality to serve as a teaching faculty member of my alma mater, California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). My academic career began when I entered East Los Angeles College and received my A.A. degree in Liberal Arts. I continued my education by receiving my B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from CSULA and finally, a Ph.D. in Special Education and Counseling, option in Rehabilitation Counselor Education, from the University of Texas at Austin. My quest for higher learning would not have been possible without the support and opportunities provided by the Ronald McNair Scholarship, Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, California State University Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program, Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) Doctoral Training Fellowship, and the University of Texas at Austin Continuing Fellowship. At the present time, I am grateful for all the support from my friends and mentors who keep me focused and motivated. Currently, I serve as a member of the CSULA Rehabilitation Counseling Program Community Advisory Board and the CSULA Veterans Advisory Committee, and have served as the sub-committee chair of the CSULA Annual Veterans Forum. In addition, I am the advisor for Rehabilitation Counseling Association, a student organization, and a co-advisor for the CSULA Golden Eagle Vets, a student veteran organization and a local chapter of the Student Veteran Association. Furthermore, I serve as a board member of the Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi, and the Honor Society of Pi Lambda Theta. I have been involved in rehabilitation education recruitment efforts with an emphasis on community college student transitions to CSULA since 2004. I believe rehabilitation education is the training ground to some of the most rewarding positions in the helping professions. I, also, believe that education plays a significant role in minimizing violence and abuse against people with disabilities. Together, we can make a difference!
TEACHING INTERESTS
Besides teaching rehabilitation education courses, I teach counseling theories, counseling in higher education, child maltreatment and family violence, and research and program evaluation courses.
RESEARCH
My research interests have been in the areas of violence against people with disabilities with a stress on proficiency development of helping professionals in this area, transitional issues of veterans, and medical and psychosocial aspects of disabilities. Recent publications include co-editorship of the book titled, Medical, Psychosocial, and Vocational Aspects of Disability (3rd ed.), and co-authorship of five book chapters and two articles in peer reviewed journals.
