Introduction

I have been at CSULA for over 25 years now. I love the campus for its cultural and ethnic diversity, and the wonderful friends I have managed to find over the course of time. CSULA is a small friendly place with alot of heart and a great deal to offer to the students and the faculty who can experience the campus life. The campus and our school has been constantly eveloving and growing in all aspects, and in particular in the areas of research and laboratory development. I am glad to have been able to make contributions to that evolution.

Teaching Interests

I am the chairman of the communications group in charge of curriculum development and research. I have taught over 26 courses in the areas of communications, solid state electronics, VLSI, electromagnetics, computer hardware, and probability and statistics. I am currently interested in innovative teaching methods and the integration and application of the multi-media technology in the teaching curriculum.

Research Interests

I am currently conducting research in several areas with common intersections. In particular, I conduct research in channel coding and modulation, application of wavelets to communications, synchronization, mapping of algorithms into VLSI, parallel processing and systolic arrays, wireless communications, software radio, multi-channel and multi-carrier communications, beamforming, LPI and spread-spectrum communications, global positioning systems, adaptive modulation and coding and cross layer optimization and data compression. Most recently, I have been doing some work on computing with Chaos and 4G LTE. Another field of recent interest to me is the field of fiber optics. In particular, I am interested in the sensory and telecommunications applications of the fiber optics technology. I also have interest in nonlinear optics and its application in integrated optics, mode locking and stablization of the laser oscillations, Holographic imaging, and non-destructive testing. I have created a Fiber Optics and a NonLinear Optics laboratory with funding from NSF (total project cost $360k), ONR (total project cost $270k), and the financial support of Hughes (now part of Boeing) aircraft and other industries. The laboratories are primarily for research purposes, but they are also used by senior undergraduate students for their senior design projects, and by Master students for their thesis.
