Amerigo Vespucci was one of the sailors that used the cross staff to determine the latitude when they were in the middle of the ocean. The cross staff is an instrument that was usually made of wood and when used properly would help the sailors know how far north or south from the equator they were (latitude). Using the cross staff, the sailors would look for the north star and they would determine how high or low from the horizon the north star was. The higher the north star, the closer to the north pole they were. Consequently, if the north star appeared lower as they traveled, that meant they were traveling south.
