pfile m303 Amerigo - Bartholomew's Map
A Map Drawn by Bartholomew Columbus

This represents the north coast of Cuba. At the time this map was drawn in 1503 Bartholomew did not know about anyone sailing around Cuba, so he and his brother Christopher thought it was part of the Asian continent. This is one reason most historians do not believe that Vespucci's first voyage in 1496-97 took place as discribed. That route all the way around the Gulf of Mexico from the Yucatan to Florida would have established that Cuba was an island. Both Vespucci and Columbus lived in Seville, Spain, during much of this time, when they were in Europe at all, so they had opportunity to communicate.
