Genoa, Florence and the other city states of Italy were economically oriented to the Mediterranean and to the Middle East. That is where they did most of their trade. Spain and Portugal had ports on the Ocean Sea. They were oriented to the north along the west coast of Europe and south along the coast of Africa. However they were fearful of sailing straight west.
