Mesopelagic Zone

Deep below surface of the "middle open sea" zone, light fades at 500-3300 feet deep; it is too dark for plants to grow. Creatures survive by eating each other or dead organisms that drift down from above.

Big eyes help headlamp fish to see in the gloom. Bonitos and other small fish swim in schools for protection, while squid andjellyfish defend themselves with tentacles. In this dark world, black fish and red prawns are almost invisible, but lantern fishhave special body chemicals that produce rows of tiny lights that shine and wink and help obsure their shapes. Some fish at this depth have silvery sides that act as mirrors and make fish difficult to see.

Swarms of prawns, shrimps, and squids migrate up beyond this zone to feed at night when it is difficult for their predators to see them.
Hammerhead sharks, giant squid, gulper eel, crustacean, luminous prawn, lantern fish, headlamp fish, sea spider all live at this level.
