Why does the coral reef look like an underwater garden?

Corals come in a huge variety of colors, even fluorescent ones.

When polyps spread out their tentacles to catch food, they resemble flowers.

Reef is an ecosystem that is home to algae, and numerous species of fish and other marine life all of which are brilliantly colored.

Unusual colored markings allow creatures to blend in with surroundings and hide from enemies.

Coral grows in an amazing variety of shapes, too-some are branched, like elkhorn coral; others are rounded like brain coral.

Reef of living coral exists best when food, oxygen, calcium carbonate and light are plentiful (warm shallow water).
