You have arrived in one of the best farmland areas in the United States! The Central Plains Region is very flat and makes it ideal for raising cattle and hogs and growing corn. If you looked at this area from a plane it would look like a checkerboard. It is marked off in neat squares of green and tan. Can you believe more food is produced in this area than in any other area of the same size in the world!
Farther north in the Central Plains Region you will find the GREAT LAKES! There are five Great Lakes: Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. These lakes were formed thousands of years ago as glaciers formed in Northern Canada. As these glaciers moved south, they dug out huge hollows in the earth. As the climated became warmer, these glaciers melted and filled the hollows, forming the Great Lakes!
