The Great Basin Region

Help me! Water!! You have entered the Great Basin Region. Here it is so dry that few plants will grow! From an airplane, this place looks dusty and dry. Only very few parts of the basin do you find farmlands. In these areas water has been pumped in.

The big reason why the Great Basin is so dry is because mountain streams that flow into it have not escape to the ocean! As a result, the water collects in low spots and forms lakes. The sun then dries up some of the water in these lakes. What is left behind is salt and other minerals. That is why so many lakes in the Great Basin are very salty. The biggest of these lakes is the GREAT SALT LAKE. Fish can't even live in it!
