INTRODUCTION

Edward Lopez is currently an assistant professor for the Department of Child and Family Studies at the California State University, Los Angeles. His program of research assesses the familial, schooling, and social factors contributing to academic resilience, risk, and achievement among youth from middle-childhood to adolescence and young-adulthood. Themes of identity development, mathematics achievement, and acculturation are of primary focus.

TEACHING INTERESTS

Dr. Lopez is particularly fond of teaching courses in Child & Adolescent Development, Ethnic Identity and Cultural Awareness, and Research Methods.

RESEARCH

Partnering with Catherine Haras (Librarian and Information Literacy Coordinator at CSU Los Angeles), Dr. Lopez conducted a one-year pilot in 2005 in preparation for a larger investigation assessing the impact of mathematics, science, and information literacy development on the academic performance and retention levels of 105 freshman Latino students attending CSU Los Angeles. In 2007, Dr. Lopez received a prestigious Spencer Foundation grant to replicate the study with Latino/a students at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.
