Ullmer Columbian Press

Columbian Press Columbian Press Eagle Picture Restoration & Research

I have recently completed restoration of an 1888 Columbian Press (Double Demy), Serial Number 4333, made by Frederick Ullmer, Ltd., Standard Works, London (pictured). While I have restored other Columbian Presses and am familiar with them, I am still seeking information specific to Ullmer Columbians (i.e., descriptions, manuals, graphics, advertisements) that would assist me in understanding some of the specific details of the press (i.e., plate, serial number) and how the press looked at the time it was manufactured (i.e., color, decorations). In relation to colors, and related information, I am seeking information about any publications (other that Hansard, 1825), current or contemporary to the press itself, that might contain such descriptive information.

I am also trying to locate other Ullmer Columbian Presses to compare information and verify some of my information. In addition to my interest in comparing the press's general appearance and detail, I am especially interested in viewing photographs of the manufacturer's plate (to compare it to the one on my press).

Ullmer Columbian Press Catalog

At this point I have only located two other confirmed Ulmer Columbians. Nicholas Smith has shared very helpful information and photographs of the 1862 Ullmer Columbian in the Rare Books Department of the Cambridge University Library, which I had the pleasure of visiting during the SUmmer of 2007. Francis Cupiss, Ltd. (Norfolk, UK) has shared information about their Columbian and the accompanying catalog sheet. David Rose and Paul Romaine have also provided significant information and references.

I continue to seek information related to the location/ownership of other Ullmer Columbians and individuals or institutions I might contact for additional input.

I would certainly appreciate any and all leads and information anyone may have.
