TEACHING INTERESTS
I teach a variety of studio courses in photography as well as Art 449: Video for Artists. In addition I teach both graduate and undergraduate level seminar classes in art theory and criticism. My belief that art making requires the development of both strong technical skills and intellectual curiosity is reflected in my involvement teaching both studio and theory courses. My goal is to offer students the opportunity, information and skills to cultivate their own sense of the world through art. On all levels, whether major or non-major, I hope to help create a culture of lively engagement with art within the classroom that extends out into the world-class arts institutions of Los Angeles that will sustain students throughout their lifetimes.

RESEARCH
Much of my artwork has been an investigation of how our relationship to the world is mediated and directed through culturally determined visual languages such as photography, vernacular signage, and diagrams. Throughout this ongoing investigation I have consistently relied on an underlying philosophy in which opposites are brought together in order to transform generic imagery and materials into an opportunity for human imagination and curiosity to flourish. Technically, my art practice expands upon basic photographic techniques to include collage, sculpture and installation.
