Diane Vernon joined the faculty at CSULA in 1968, after 5 years of clinical nursing as an RN in the first ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in Los Angeles. In addition, her clinical nursing background includes rich experience in varied specialty areas such as I.V. therapy, Orthopedics, Gynecology, and Gastrointestinal and Gastrourinary units. She taught six years at Queen of the Angels School of Nursing (a National League of Nursing Accredited diploma Program), and in Inservice education. High quality academic advisement and mentoring of both students and faculty have been ongoing priorities through-out her career. Her community involvement has included serving as American Red Cross Disaster Nurse and membership on the Executive Board for Sigma Theta Tau, Nu Mu Chapter.
Clinical Nursing Education, in the specialty of Medical-surgical nursing, remains a deep commitment. In addition, Diane Vernon was the co-developer of the Department's capstone courses for all students in the Generic nursing program. Her emphasis on critical thinking skills and activities in these courses, as well as in the RN Transfer Student Seminars, served as a model for future course development in the department. Her planning and coordination activities for the Generic Students Cooperative Education course was significant to both the students and the community.
Diane Vernon has served as a reviewer, for a wide variety of chapters and textbooks, for multiple Medical-Surgical Nursing textbooks from numerous publishing companies. Also, she authored the Department's Math for Medication Administration Module (which is now in its 3rd edition), a peer mentoring Program Handbook, and co-authored, On-line Case Studies to help faculty learn how to do on-line faculty advisment. As the University Faculty Coordinator for PALS (the University's Peer Mentoring Program for 350 first-time freshmen), she oversees the activites of 19-20 Peer mentors and Faculty Coordinators from the University's six schools. In her postion as the Associate Director of the University's Academic Advisement Center for Undeclared Majors, she is very involved in advising Undeclared Majors, and in planning and presenting multiple workshops on the General Education Program, Academic Advisement, and Advising Students at Risk. She is the co-author of the Introduction to Higher Education Course for Undeclared Majors and co-coordintates the offering of 18 sections annually.
