INTRODUCTION
Dr. Howell earned her Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she also completed a Master’s in Business Administration and a Masters in Information Systems. She is a former Adjunct Instructor in the School of Management at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Howell completed a one-year tenure as a National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biomedical Informatics Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has ten years of healthcare industry experience addressing the real-world challenges faced by healthcare organizations as they prepare to compete in the digital age.
TEACHING INTERESTS
Dr. Howell’s teaching philosophy is to foster an environment where students of varying academic prowess feel invigorated, engaged, challenged, and motivated. With each student interaction, she aims to create a positive and enlightening learning experience where a students’ imagination is unbounded. She is passionate about teaching Health Information Technology, Clinical Informatics, Business Intelligence, Data Visualization, Analytics, and Machine Learning.
RESEARCH
Dr. Howell’s research centers primarily on Medicaid recipients. She is acutely aware of the impact of social determinants on the at-risk population living in underserved urban communities. Underserved patients are more susceptible to multiple chronic diseases stemming from genetic pre-dispositions and lifestyle patterns. Patients faced with significant financial and social hardships account for a considerable portion of healthcare expenditure. In direct response to the continued occurrence of inefficiencies and poor outcomes, regulations and quality improvement initiatives have centered around three objectives: improving the quality of care, improving patient outcomes and reducing the cost of healthcare. In alignment with the three national goals, her research questions cover four central themes: health information technology, healthcare analytics, privacy, and emergency notification systems.
