• National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
  
  Contains information on this important professional society for teachers of mathematics - its work, conferences, how to join... Be sure to look at the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (Standards 2000). You can subscribe to the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education on line. Take a look at sample copies. (The other journals will be available on line in the near future.)  
• National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM)
  
  Contains information on this professional organization for leaders in mathematics education. Be sure to look at "Links to Other Sites."

Research Resources

• CSLA Library
  
  This is a convenient way of finding references for your research. Spend time navigating this site. Take special note of the Eric link. Also, you can look at our on-line library catalog to find what resources are available there. If you are accessing this from your home, you will need to use telnet. Note the information given on the screen and on the course handout. Important research resources will be found when you click the Other Research Tools button.  
• CSLA Information Competence Web Site
  
  This web site has many resources that can help you gain skill on how to do electronic searches. Information on how to access the internet from your home computer can be found in the Basic Internet Skills section. It even contains a link which enables you to download browser software (Netscape or Explorer). The Accessing Knowledge Resources section has an excellent tutorial of the essential steps you should consider when working on your research paper. Spend some time getting acquainted with this valuable site.  
• Accessing Library Databases from University or Home Computers
  
  This is a useful guide on how to use the electronic databases on the CSLA web site from home or in a lab on campus. You might want to print a copy.  
• Research Syntheses
  
  The Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) and the major OERI-funded institutions (Centers, Labs, ERIC) have produced a substantial body of educational research and development information. It has a search engine for searching ERIC Digests - summaries of research on particular topics. This is a site which is accessed from the U.S. Department of Education web site.  
• Eisenhower Nat'l Clearinghouse for Math & Science Ed (Enc).
  
  The Eisenhower Regional Consortia serve 10 regions of the country and work to disseminate effective materials and teaching method. If you look carefully, you will even find full text articles on the mathematics reform. And it has a link to ERIC Digests also. They have a separate web site on the TIMSS (The Third Internatonal Mathematics and Science Study). It has links to National and State Standards .  
• NCREL
  
  The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) is one of ten Regional Educational Laboratories. One of their projects, Pathways to School Improvement Internet Server, offers easy to find, concise, research-based information on school improvement. The Pathways server provides important information on a variety of categories including: Assessment, At-Risk Children and Youth, Goals and Standards, Governance/Management, leadership, Learning, Literacy, Mathematics, etc.  
• National Center for Education Statistics
  
  Contains important information on the state of education in the U.S. and other countries.  
• The Math Forum
  
  The Math Forum, is a virtual center for mathematics education on the internet. Funded by the National Science Foundation. Be sure to look at "Math Education: Innovations and Concerns" and "Key Math Issues" for valuable insights into views on the mathematics reform. There is a table. for easy access to the valuable resources included in this site.
  If you don't have software to get on the internet, they include some software for accessing the internet..  
• TERC
  
  TERC is a nonprofit research and development organization committed to improving mathematics and science learning and teaching. Among the curricular materials they developed are Used Numbers: Real Data in the Classroom. Take some time to browse this valuable site and take a look at the project resource links they provide.

Evaluation of Mathematical Learning

• National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
  
  Government site that includes the results of this national assessment of the progress of students in K-12 mathematical learning.  
• TIMSS Report
  
  With data on half a million students from 41 countries, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the largest, most comprehensive, and most rigorous international study of schools and students ever.

• NCTM Principles and Standards Standards for School Mathematics
  
  . Take a look at the Standards, including the e-Standards (electronic examples of classroom applications). The 1989 Curriculum & Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics is also accessible at this site.  
• Illuminations
  
  This site illuminates the NCTM Principles and Standards. It has excellent teacher and student resources. Be sure to check it out.  
• California Mathematics Standards and the California Framework.
  
  The Mathematics Standards developed by the State of California Academic Standards Commission and its accompanying framework are discussed on this site.

• Equals and Family Math
  
  Since 1977, EQUALS programs have worked to increase access and equity in mathematics for students in traditionally under-represented groups. Gender and race, class and culture are issues that affect all students. FAMILY MATH is a program developed by EQUALS, at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, California. The goal of FAMILY MATH is to encourage underrepresented groups (especially girls and minority students) to enter careers that use mathematics. FAMILY MATH is, of course, family-based.

• Blue Web'N.
  
  Blue Web'n is a searchable database of outstanding Internet learning sites categorized by subject area, audience, and type (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, & tools). There is a review process of the materials chosen to include on this site.  
• Classroom Connect
  
  This site includes links to information on K-12 Resources.  
• Webflier
  
  This site includes links to a wide variety of resources. It has resources across the curriculum. Check out the math games and teacher lesson plans.  
• SCORE
  
  . (Schools of California on-line Resources for Education). This is a valuable site with many useful teaching resources.
