INTRODUCTION
I am a professor in the Division of Special Education and Counseling. My primary areas of expertise include instruction and assessment for students with learning disabilities, dyslexia and reading disabilities, attention deficit disorders, and behavior disorders. I have taught students of different age and grade levels in urban schools and clinical settings as a learning disabilities specialist and reading specialist. I often provide professional development and consultation for schools focusing on implementing Response-to-Intervention models, improving reading instruction for struggling learners, and accommodating students with learning and behavior difficulties. I have published three recent books, a textbook, Differentiating Instruction in Inclusive Classrooms: The Special Educator’s Guide; a reading intervention handbook, Interventions for Reading Success; and a co-edited book, Evidence-Based Reading Practices for Response to Intervention. I have also authored or coauthored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. I am currently serving as Co-Editor of the journal, Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, a journal of the Division of Learning Disabilities in the Council for Exceptional Children.
TEACHING INTERESTS
I teach various courses in the Division of Special Education and Counseling, including instructional methods courses in the Mild to Moderate Disabilities credential and masters programs and research seminars for masters and doctoral students.
RESEARCH
My research interests include issues related to effective reading instruction for English learners, students with learning disabilities and students at risk for reading failure. I have served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on several funded research projects conducted in urban schools in Southern California. My current projects focus on early reading intervention to prevent reading difficulties for English learners, and the quality of reading instruction provided by special education teachers for students with learning disabilities.
