Sample Basic Soccer Skills Tests

JUGGLING

Description: Keeping the ball air-borne while utilizing all body parts except hands and arms. The score may be derived by either counting the best of two attempts or may be established from the average score of the two best attempts out of three trials (the latter is a better indicator of performance consistency).

Scoring: Time of ball in the air (starting at first contact), or number of contacts with ball before it touches anything other than the player's (legal) body parts.

Purpose: Develop awareness of the importance of the balancing foot, improve, the feel for the ball, ball control and agility.

DRIBBLING

Description: Set up six cones or markers 2 yards apart over a distance of 10 yards. The player begins with the ball at her or his feet at the first marker and weaves in and out of the markers in a zig-zag fashion, around the end marker and zig-zags back to the starting point.

Scoring: One second penalty for knocking (touching is O.K.) down cones (per trial); two second penalty for not circling cone properly and/or going over cone (per trial). Time is measured (to the nearest tenth of a second) from the moment the players makes contact with ball (player initiated test) until both player and ball have crossed the finish line.

Purpose: Demonstrate ball control while changing directions and under time pressure.

SHUTTLE RUN

Description: Plastic cones placed to form a triangle (10 yards a side, at an angle of ~60 degrees), and a finish line on a smooth grassy surface will be used for this test (see diagram). Participants are required to start facing forward between cones "A" and "B;" dribble through (past gate) cones "C" and "D" go around cone "C" to the left and dribble back to cones "A" and "B." Dribble around Cone "B" to your left (now you face cones "E" & "F"), and dribble forward through the finish line between cones "E" & "F." (Walk kids through the test without and then with ball before administering the test. You may also test performance without ball for added fun and fitness!) Agility Test image

Scoring: One second penalty for touching or knocking down cones (per trial); two second penalty for not circling cone properly and/or going over cone (per trial). Time is measured (to the nearest tenth of a second) from the moment the players makes contact with ball (player initiated test) until both player and ball have crossed the finish line between cones "E" & "F."

Purpose: Develop agility or the capacity for quick and efficient changes in direction and form of body movement while maintaining ball control.

300 YARD RUN

Description: Run with ball through a 50 yard course (marked by two cones) from the start gate to the 50 yard gate and return (repeat three times for an altogether six interval performance).

Scoring: Time is measured (to the nearest tenth of a second) from the moment the players makes contact with ball (player initiated test) until both player and ball have crossed the finish line between cones "A" & "B" or starting gate cones.

Purpose: Develop stamina or the capacity for prolonged body movement while maintaining ball control.
