Welcome to the PE 150 On-Line practice Quiz #1
Student Resource Center
Question 1: Cardiovascular endurance is defined as:
"The ability of the body to perform prolonged, large-muscle, dynamic exercises at moderate-to-high levels of intensity." The contribution of a strong heart muscle and efficient lungs to overall health make cardivascular endurance the most important health related fitness component (Fahey, Insel, & Roth, 1997, p. 20-21).
Question 2: Muscular Endurance is defined as:
A muscle, or muscle group's capacity to perform continuous sub-maximal contractions (Fahey et al., p. 22; Hoeger & Hoeger, 1994, p. 121)
Question 3: Several major studies suggest that inactivity may be the most significant cardiovascular disease risk factor.
Several large-scale studies (e.g., Blair, Jacobs, & Powell, 1985; Blair, Kohl, Paffenbarger, Clark, Cooper, & Gibbons, 1989; Paffenbarger, Hyde, Wing, Hsieh, 1986 ...) produced data that demonstrate a graded and consistent inverse relationship between fitness of the heart and lungs and early death. The positive effect of exercise persisted over age and other known risk factors (higher fitness values correspond to lower mortality values, at any age, gender, or when smoking, obesity, etc... risk factors are considered. Thus, if you must smoke, eat lots of fatty foods, and you're constantly stressed out at home and at work, initiating an exercise program will most certainly prolong your miserable existence...).
Question 4: The number one killer disease in America is:
Almost 50% of all deaths in the US are caused by cardivascular disease. Cardiovascular disease combined with all cancers represent ~70% of all deaths. It is estimated that a change in life style could save ~1.1 milion lives a year (80%!) by preventing fatal CV desease and cancer.
Question 5: The number one killer disease in American women is:
Despite the fact that on the average women outlive men, the statistics presented in question #4 are true for both men and women.
