David B Peterson, PhD, Professor at Cal State LA, is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC, IA-inactive), and licensed clinical psychologist (CA, IL; IA and NY inactive). Served as a counselor and psychologist educator and researcher beginning 1996 focusing on applying psychological principles to clinical problem solving in counseling, disability, and function.

Provided or supervised counseling and psychological services for people with a wide range of disabilities since 1988, including chronic and severe psychiatric diagnoses, deafness, developmental disabilities, stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and other disabilities across the lifespan. Consulted as a Medical Expert for Social Security Administration’s Office of Hearing Operations for adult and child psychiatric disability cases since 2007.

Contributed to 63 scholarly products including one book, 22 peer-reviewed journal articles, 33 invited book chapters (including 9 handbooks), four computer-based programs, served as member of four editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals in psychology and disability, guest editor for two special issues of peer-reviewed journals, contributed to 47 peer-reviewed/invited national and local presentations, and directed/co-directed seven research/training grants totaling over $3 million. Program of scholarship focused on the clinical implementation of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), and ethical decision-making.

Course development and instruction focused on applying psychological principles to counseling people with a broad range of disabilities, including 46 course preparations in 20 content areas within programs accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the American Psychological Association (APA).
