INTRODUCTION
Cynthia Reifler Flores is the first director of the CalStateLa Mariachi, Mariachi Aguila de Oro. She has been a professional mariachi and music educator for over 20 years and has shared venues throughout North America with the world's greatest mariachi musicians. Cindy was an original member of Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, the first all female-show mariachi in the United States and was their acting director for almost nine years. She also recently was a member of the Grammy winning all female Mariachi Divas. Cindy currently performs with Trio Bohemio, an all female mariachi trio.
TEACHING INTERESTS
My goal is to acheive a high level of performance from my group. Whether working on standards, recent compositions or classics from an earlier era, my goal is to have the performers understand the historical and cultural context of the repertory and always strive for improvement of ensemble and instrument technique as well as stylistic interpretation.
RESEARCH
My undergraqduate thesis, retained at UCSC, "Son de La Negra: An Oral History of Change in a Traditional Mexican Folk-Song" is based on original research and interviews with members of Mariachi Vargas. My current project, A Master's Thesis for Latin American Studies, "Origins and Continuance of Women’s Participation in Mariachi and the Cultural and Transnational Implications: California", attempts to add to the growing documentation of the history of women in mariachi, through oral history, stastistics and interviews.
