Question A: Drawing on George Washington Gómez as your source
of evidence, what do you think are the values of Américo Paredes?
What does he seem to endorse and what does he seem to criticize?
For your thesis, present a concise summation of how Paredes would define
the “good life” or the “good society.”
*Note: In answering this question, strive to encompass as much
of the novel as possible, while still providing concrete examples to illustrate
your ideas. In the course of the essay, also make at least two specific
comparisons to other readings or to lecture concepts from other class sessions
(i.e. not on Paredes). Try to be creative in how you make these connections
to class materials outside the novel.
Question B: Compare Paredes’s novel to the Harlem Renaissance readings
in terms of concepts of race, ethnicity, patriotism, and community.
What values or ideas expressed in Paredes’s novel also appear in the Harlem
Renaissance readings? What differences are there? For your
thesis, present an overall synthesis that explains how the two sets of
readings relate to each other. For your evidence, draw equally on
specific examples from both sets of readings.
*Note: Remember that the Harlem Renaissance readings refer to
both the Hughes/Schuyler debate and the collection of literature.
