INTRODUCTION

Since 1986, it has been my honor to serve on the faculty of the Charter College of Education, at California State University, Los Angeles. Working with the outstanding faculty of the Division of Curriculum and Instruction, and with exemplary educators in the CSULA service area, I have helped to advance quality teaching and schooling through teaching teachers, building teacher preparation programs, developing K-12 partnerships for teaching and student achievement, and conducting research on teacher education. In addition, I have represented the interests of teacher education before California's policy community, within the California State University system, and within professional organizations. I am a past president of the California Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the immediate past president of the California Council on Teacher Education, and a recipient of the CSULA Distinguished Woman Award. I am a graduate of the University of Southern California, and I hold a Ph.D. in Education, with a specialization in Curriulum and the Study of Schooling, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

TEACHING INTERESTS

I am an advocate for teaching as a profession and schooling as a high quality, equitable and meaningful experience for all children. As such, I am particularly interested in teacher leadership in curriculum policy and decision-making, teachers' critical inquiry and reflection, and culturally relevant curriculum and instruction in urban public schools. These interests pervade my courses in both the Single Subject Credential program and the Master of Arts Degree in Education: Option in Middle and Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. The courses I teach include, Instructional Strategies in Secondary Teaching; Learning Environments and Instruction in Secondary Schools; Inquiry into Teaching, Curriculum, and School Culture; Principles and Practices of Curriculum Development; and Teaching in Multicultural Middle and Secondary Classrooms. In addition to teaching courses, I am the coordinator of the Single Subject Internship Credential program and the director of the CSULA Teacher Recruitment Partnership Project.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Beginning with a doctoral dissertation centered on student teaching in teacher education, I have maintained research interests in the curriculum of teacher education and in culturally relevant curriculum and instruction. Over the past decade, I have made presentations of research and practice in these areas at the national meetings of the American Educational Research Association, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the international meetings of the International Council on the Education of Teachers. Recent publications include, Developing blended teacher education programs: From policy to practice, published in the Teacher Education Quarterly, and A perspective on the reform of teacher education in California, published in Issues in Teacher Education. In addition to recent publications, I have conducted recent research on teacher education in collaboration with colleagues in the Division of Educational Foundations and the Division of Curriculum and Instruction. The Effects of Implementing California's Credentialing Reforms Pursuant to the Provisions of SB 2042 is a research effort sponsored by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
