Dr. Chee received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Language, Literacy, and Learning) at the University of Southern California where she specialized in second language acquisition and the process of literacy development for both native speakers of English and second language learners. She joined the Division of Curriculum and Instruction at CSULA in the fall of 1998.
Dr. Chee teaches two courses: A curriculum and instruction course in reading for pre-service teacher candidates and a research method course in the master's degree program in reading. Her goals are to provide pre-service teacher candidates and teachers with theories of language acquisition and literacy development and to share a wide repertoire of research-informed instructional strategies and assessment tools. She also guides teachers with conducting action research or qualitative/ethnogrphic research in the classroom and writing research papers.
Dr. Chee's primary research interest includes the second languge acquisition
process and literacy development. Her dissertation was awarded the Best
Dissertation of the Year 2002 by the University of Southern California.
Much of her work concentrates on reconceptualizing the learner, the language
acquisition process, and the language learning/acquisition context. She
was awarded a Title VII Fellowship of the Bilingual Education Fellowship
Program by the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Language Affairs
(OBEMLA) at the University of Southern California for her doctoral study
in the Langugae, Literacy, and Learning Program in 1993. She was a member
of the MacArthur Foundation Research Team, which investigated the trajectories
and contexts of immigrant children's lives in two diverse, urban communities
in California, Oakland and Los Angeles, from 1996 to 1999.
