The Electronic Multimedia Arts Institute
This project is designed to define the purpose, goals, and faculty expertise for an "Electronic Multimedia Arts Institute" at CSLA to address the instructional needs of both faculty and students related to interactive multimedia. Today, Los Angeles is rapidly shifting away from an aerospace / miltary-based economy to an entertainment one. CSLA by its geographic location and academic resources is in a pivotal position to fulfill the societal need of preparing students to meet the challenges of the new high-tech careers. Drawing upon its strong faculty from the various Schools at CSLA who are working in multimedia, CSLA is ready to:
- 1. Grasp the challenge of preparing students for new careers in interactive multimedia arts through the creation of a new undergraduate degree.
- 2. Create an instructional multimedia resource center for academic support and training which ls accessible on-line as well as by conventional means.
Why Cal State LA
- Los Angeles is the world's 2nd largest multimedia center.
- Los Angeles is the world's preeminent center of film and television
production.
- Cal State LA has one of the most diverse university populations in the
world.
- Cal State LA is the largest teacher training institution in the country.
- Cal State LA has excellent programs in all the constituent areas needed
for a well rounded multimedia program.

Activities
1. Interviews
Professors Bloom and Semrau are conducting interviews,
with members of the university community, into the potential role, value
and operational structure of a multi media program at Cal State LA. Significant
parts of the design of this program are based on these interview.
Already interviewed are the Provost and VPAA Margaret Hartman, the Dean
of Undergraduate Studies Alfredo Gonzales, Deans Alan Mori (Education),
Dean Carl Selkin (Arts and Letters), Dean
Ron Lemos (Business), Dean
Donald Dewey (Natural and Social Sciences) and Dean
Raymond Landis (Engineering).
A list of faculty, from across the campus, is being developed to be interviewed.
Focus Groups of Department Chairs is also planned and meetings with representatives
of the local multi media industry.
2. Resources Developed
We
have developed a Faculty
Wed Resources web site to assist faculty in mastering the use of the
wed. James
Heideman, Professor of Technology, and a dynamic group of Professor
Semrau's Graduate Students also worked on this project. Professors Bloom
Semrau and Heideman have conducted six world wide web workshops for the
university faculty. More workshops on a range of issues are planned with
the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning.
3. New Technologies Investigated
We have engaged in the exploration of new technologies relevant to the establishment
of a multimedia program. Dr. Semrau together with Broadcasting faculty member
Matthew Jacobson created a Quicktime VR (Virtual Reality) project to evaluate
this cutting edge technology. Ongoing development of World Wide Web resources
and HTML authoring strategies continues. Professors Bloom, Semrau and Heideman
created a video tape showcasing almost 200 university web pages from around
the world, this tape was presented at the 1996 Faculty Retreat. The Electronic Multimedia Arts Institute project will make this video available to anyone requesting a copy.
