![]() | For many years, films have been categorized by certain subjects or topics. Beginning in the 1940ís, there was a genre of American films called film noir. These films were considered to be "dark" or "black." Many of them were written by Americans but directed by Germans, with French critics also having a significant interest in the films. The films were characterized by sudden violence, tough romantic intensity, deceptive surfaces, irony and doom. Films of that nature tended to reflect American culture according to the French. But more importantly, it was an example of American film style. In more recent years from the 1970's to the present day, the genre or cycle was revived, but with the new name, neo noir. This revival of the genre was characterized "new" mainly American directors, new actors, better technology, widescreen, and in color.Film noir and neo noir films address the darker side of a collective mind. They reflect all that is immoral and perverse in American society. They contain a detailed version of injustice, criminal acticity, violence, and corruption. The films of the 40's and 50's and the neo noirs of the 70's,80's, and 90's give parts of our society a common identity through crime and asserts instability. Film goers are still somewhat pleased by the portrayal of the dark side of the American dream. | ||
