In 2004 I will have been at CSULA for 30 years. I have been fortunate to have had a varied career, spending the first 26 years in the College of Health and Human Services and the last few years in the Charter College of Education. IN HHS I was the Chair of the Child Development Interdisciplinary Program and then of the Department of Child Family Studies. In the CCOE, I implemented with Dr. Bruce Campbell the new Urban Learning Major. I now teach in the area of Early Childhood Education in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction.
My interest in teaching covers a wide area, including, infancy, family relations, parent education, early childhood education, and social science methodology. I am particularly interested in teaching divorcing parents how to get along with one another well enough so that their children are not harmed in the process. In all my teaching I use cooperative learning and inquiry projects. I am committed to teaching the way I would like to see my students teach children.
MY most recent interests have been in creating cohorts of students on campus so that students become part of a community of learners. This allows the transfer student to become involved with other students immediatley and, thus, reduces the risk of "transfer shock". My other interest is in finding ways for students and faculty to work together to break down the barriers to collaborative teamwork across disciplines. This involves learning the unique roles an language of each professional group so that they can interact with each other. There is hardly a teaching job which does not require the use of teamwork to provide the best possible outcome for students. Representative Professional Activities
