INTRODUCTION
Dr. Williams joined the faculty of the Charter College of Education in the fall of 2007 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland - College Park. Currently at CSULA, Dr. Williams is the Principal Investigator for the Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency (LAUTR) Program which is a federally funded program that trains math and science teachers using a residency model. The residency model places pre-service teachers into classrooms paired with seasoned mentors for an entire school year while at the same time attending classes at CSULA which helps the candidates to make sense of their experiences. Outside of his administrative endeavors with the LAUTR program, Dr. Williams continues to explore the emerging links between Popular Culture (Nationally and Internationally) and Mainstream Academic Classrooms as well as the link's influence on Student Identity Formation/Development. Finally, his work also looks at Technology, Schools and 21st century learning. Off Campus, Dr. Williams works as a consultant for school districts in the area of Diversity Training.
TEACHING INTERESTS
Dr. Williams currently teaches courses in multiple areas inside of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Specializing in Secondary Education, Dr. Williams teaches courses mainly in the Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency Program (LAUTR). Dr. Williams teaches courses that focus on teacher research and helping teacher understand the collection of data to improve their own instruction.
RESEARCH
It was at the University of Maryland, College Park that Dr. Williams began investigating the role of Popular Culture (Hip Hop Culture specifically) in Mainstream Academic Classrooms. Using the frameworks of both Critical Social Theory and Critical Race Theory, Dr. Williams continues to research how students see themselves in Mainstream Academic Classrooms. Dr. Williams is also researching how students' cultural affiliation influences teacher beliefs about student ability. Dr. Williams is heavily involved with researching alternative pathways for teacher training including residency programs. Finally, Dr. Williams looks at school climate and its influence on systematic and structural school reform.
