Application Requirements and Information for Prospective ELP Students

Thank you for your interest in the ELP.  The following information explains the admission procedures and supplies information about the English Language Program at Cal State L.A.

Required Documents for Students Applying from Outside of the United States

1.   A completed English Language Program Application Form.  Download it from www.calstatela.edu/elp.

2.   A readable copy of your passport biographical pages clearly showing your name, date of birth, and photograph.  A clear copy of your spouse’s/dependents’ passport biographical page(s) if they will come with you on an F-2 Dependent Visa.

3.   Application Fee of USD $150 and Tuition Deposit of USD $800 (Check only, payable to CSULA-ELP).

4.   Sponsor Statement of Financial Support:

  • Original bank statement to cover expenses for one year with the following amounts for 2011-2012:
    Student’s education and living expenses + *Spouse + *Each Child
                            $24,000 $4,000       $2,000

  The bank statement must not be more than 6 months old from the date it was issued and printed by the banking institution. Funds must be in the form of Cash, Certificates of Deposit, or Money Market accounts – no stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement accounts, or any other form of securitized investment. The bank statement cannot be returned to you, and no photocopies, scans, or faxes will be accepted. All costs are subject to change without notice.

  • Sponsor’s signature on Sponsor Support page (inside the English Language Program Application Form)

5.  *Dependents:  If husband, wife, or minor children will be coming with you, we need the following:

  • Photocopies of passport biographical pages for each dependent
  • Additional amounts of financial support for each dependent (Spouse: $4,000; Each Child: $2,000) reflected in the overall bank statement balance
  • Evidence of personal relationship (For example, photocopy of Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate)

Required Documents for Transfer Students
Students already in the United States and attending another school must provide:

Everything listed in # 1 – 5 above, AND

6.   A photocopy of your most recent Form I-20

7.   A photocopy of your F-1 Student Visa

8.   A photocopy of your 1-94 Card

After we receive all your documents at our Mailing Address, we will send the Form I-20 by Express Mail within two weeks.  See Mailing Method in the English Language Program Application Form for additional options.  With your Form I-20, we will send your Letter of Acceptance and additional information that will help you obtain your visa and plan your trip here.


Proof of English Language Proficiency – TOEFL

  • A TOEFL score is NOT required for admission into the English Language Program.
  • For bachelor degree programs at Cal State L.A., the minimum TOEFL score is 61 iBT (500 PBT), and for graduate programs the minimum is 80 (550 PBT), except for the TESOL MA, which requires at least 100 iBT (600 PBT).  The institution code for California State University, Los Angeles is 4399.

Where to Live

  • ELP students are welcome in the university dormitories (www.calstatela.edu/univ/housing), where students pay about $650 per month ($1,877 for 12 weeks) for a shared bedroom in a fully-furnished apartment with water, natural gas, electricity, trash collection and basic satellite TV service included.  Food and telephone service cost extra.  For information on how to reserve a space, see www.calstatela.edu/univ/housing/elp-signup.php or contact the English Language Program.
