Academic Program Descriptions
The English Language Program (ELP) at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) is a non-credit, intensive, multi-component, academically-oriented language program of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The Program uses clock hours to establish a Full Course of Study, consisting of a minimum of 18 literal clock hours (1,080 contact minutes) of face-to-face classroom instruction per week in addition to 3 literal clock hours (120 contact minutes) of on-campus laboratory practice per week for all students at all levels of instruction during each 10-week quarter (academic term). In total, there are 21 literal contact hours (1,260 minutes) minutes per week for 10 weeks, equaling 210 literal contact hours (12,600 minutes) at each Level of Instruction during each academic term. The ELP consists of a lower and an upper component: the Pre-Academic component, and the Academic Bridge component.
The Pre-Academic component consists of a multi-level, skills-based program that prepares students to succeed in the English-medium, college or university credit classroom by providing instruction in the following courses: 1) Grammar, 2) Writing, 3) Reading, 4) Listening, 5) Speaking, and 6) College Success (academic preparation). There are 6 Levels of Instruction in the Pre-Academic component: Level 1 = Low Beginner; Level 2 = High Beginner; Level 3 = Low Intermediate; Level 4 = High Intermediate; Level 5 = Low Advanced; Level 6 = High Advanced. Completion time, start to finish without level repetition, for the Pre-Academic component is 1,260 Hours of Instruction; 60 Weeks of Instruction; 6 Academic Quarters of Instruction; 24 Months of Instruction (one quarter vacation included per year).

|1||Listening||1-6||Listening courses prepare students to receive aural communication in both public and academic environments by placing emphasis on improvement of aural comprehension skills. Activities range from listening to brief descriptions, directions, and dialogs to listening to lectures and other lengthy presentations. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Speaking courses.|
|2||Speaking||1-6||Speaking courses prepare students to communicate orally in everyday and academic contexts. Emphasis is placed on developing language functions and pronunciation, in addition to improving social and intercultural communication skills. Activities range from making brief statements to participation in small group discussions, formal oral presentations, and debates. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Listening courses.|
|3||Reading||1-6||Reading courses engage students in a variety of reading materials from daily and academic experience and prepare them for collegiate reading tasks. Instruction includes focuses on developing vocabulary reading skills, ability to use resources, and critical thinking skills.|
|4||Writing||1-6||Writing courses are designed to help students increase fluency and build confidence in writing by focusing on writing as a process. Through inventing, drafting, and revising, students learn to write for a variety of specific audiences and purposes. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Grammar courses.|
|5||Grammar||1-6||Grammar courses are designed to complement the Writing co-requisite Writing components by providing instruction and practice with discrete grammar points that are necessary for accurate and effective writing. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Writing courses.|
|6||College Success||1-6||College Success courses feature preparation for standardized language assessment examinations commonly used for academic admission, including the TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language, the IELTSTM (International English Language Testing System), and the Pearson Test of English (PTE). Courses also provide students with skills and knowledge to support success in the academic environment.|
Academic Bridge Component: Levels 7 – 10
The Academic Bridge component is a multi-term, advanced program for students who need language support at the beginning or during their academic study in institutions of higher education. Students are able to enroll in both university credit courses and Academic Bridge ESOL courses concurrently during the same academic term. The curriculum of the Academic Bridge component emphasizes language refinement, and includes instruction in these courses: 1) Academic Research, 2) Academic Presentation, 3) Applications of Advanced Vocabulary, 4) Academic Listening at a Native Level, 5) Academic Speaking and 6) Subject-Based Studies. There are 4 Levels of Instruction in the Academic Bridge component: Level 7 = Superior 1; Level 8 = Superior 2; Level 9 = Superior 3; Level 10 = Superior 4. Completion time, start to finish, for the Academic Bridge component is (approximately) 1,260 Hours of Instruction; 40 Weeks of Instruction; 4 Academic Quarters of Instruction; 12 Months of Instruction (no vacation included).
The Academic Bridge Component of the English Language Program has been especially designed for international students who are either preparing for or already engaged in academic work at the university level. The full course of study provided at the Academic Bridge component consists of either a minimum of 18 clock hours of ESOL classroom instruction per week per 10-week quarter (academic term) or a suitable combination of ESOL and university credit courses that together constitute a Full Course of Study. The curriculum includes academically-oriented training in the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and vocabulary, in addition to preparation in study skills, library use, research paper writing, oral presentation and orientation to American culture and classroom. Video and multimedia computer laboratories are integrated into the curriculum. All Academic Bridge students are eligible to enroll concurrently through Open University in 1 or 2 credit academic undergraduate or graduate courses at Cal State L.A. during each quarter. A typical course at the Undergraduate or Graduate level is 4 units.
Open University permits ELP Academic Bridge students to take regular university courses offered at Cal State L.A. without going through the formal admission process. The cost of enrollment varies depending on the number of credit units in which the student chooses to enroll per quarter and depending on the tuition and fee rates set by the university for the Academic Year. Currently, enrollment in Undergraduate courses costs USD $334 per unit and Graduate courses cost USD $397 per unit during the 2011 - 2012 Academic Year.

Learning academic vocabulary that is used in a variety of different subject areas enables better comprehension of academic texts and improvement in writing assignments in an appropriate academic style.|
|4||Academic Research||7-10||Academic Research courses provide guidance in advanced, collegiate-level writing and include emphases on appropriate style, citation, and use of research tools such as library databases, scholarly journals, and the Internet. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Academic Presentation courses.|
|5||Academic Presentation||7-10||Academic Presentation courses are designed to aid advanced students in developing methods and techniques for effectively presenting the progress and results of research to academic and general audiences. These courses are co-requisites with corresponding Academic Research courses.|
|6||Subject-Based Studies||7-10||Subject-Based Studies courses enable students to work individually or in small groups on in-depth vocabulary development, reading, writing and presentation in their chosen field or subject matter of academic or professional interest.|
