Prospective Students

The International Office provides the following information for general guidance only. All applications to the University, including those from international students, are processed and evaluated by the University Admissions Office. Please visit their website for the most up-to-date information and deadlines. Further, direct all correspondence or additional questions you may have to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment.

PROCEDURES

[1] Check the office of Admissions and Recruitment website for application filing periods and document submission deadlines.
[2] Submit an online application thru CSUMentor and pay the application processing fee by the deadline. Paper applications are not accepted. Each application is only good for the term you are applying. If you are applying for multiple terms, you must submit separate applications for each term.
[3] Enter your CORRECT mailing and email addresses on the application in order to receive your campus ID (CIN) and an account password (PIN).
[4] Include your CIN on all documents and send them in one packet to CSULA before the document deadline. Please refer to the "Document Checklist" section below. Applications with an incomplete document packet will NOT be processed.

Notes: (1) cBT TOEFL has not been offered by ETS for at least 5 years. And a TOEFL result is only valid for 2 years. In this sense, a cBT score should not be accepted. (2) the 73 PTE is approved by Dr. K Brown and Dr. Ann Snow.

[2] If your bachelor degree was issued by an institution where the language of instruction was not English, the English proficiency requirement must be met.
[3] Exceptions:
  • Undergrad applicants:
    • You have attended school in the U.S. for 3 years or 6 terms; or
    • You have attended a non-U.S. institute for 6 terms where English is the sole medium of instruction. A statement verifying English as the medium of instruction will be required from the institution.
  • Graduate applicants:
    • You have a Bachelor's degree from a non-U.S. institute where English is the medium of instruction. A statement verifying English as the medium of instruction will be required from the institution.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

Some major departments may have additional admission requirements. Please check your department’s website for details. Please also refer to IMPACTION for any additional department restrictions.

Freshman Requirements

U.S. High Schools, or
Accredited International High Schools, or
Overseas High Schools with an American format

Overseas high schools where the language of instruction was not exclusively English

[1] Submission of a score on either the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (CEEB-SAT) is required. 3402 (SAT) or 842 (ACT)
[2] High school grade point averages and test scores are used to determine eligibility. Completion of a comprehensive pattern of college preparatory study with grades of C or better in all subjects is required. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Lower Division Transfer Requirements

Lower division transfer applicants must meet all of the following requirements for admission consideration.
High School Eligibility
[1] Please refer to the Freshman Requirement section.
[2] College Preparatory Courses
Must meet the minimum requirement in ALL AREAS.
Note: Missing HS Subject Requirement CAN be made up with appropriate college courses.
College Grade Point Average (GPA)
[1] GPA minimum is 2.4
[2] Must be in good standing at the last institution attended.
English Proficiency
Please refer to the above English Proficiency Requirement section for details.

Upper Division Transfer Requirements

Upper division transfer applicants must meet all of the following requirements for admission consideration.
Units
[1] 60 semester or 90 quarter transferable units must be completed by:
Spring term for Fall admission or Fall term for Spring admission.
[2] No credit is awarded for remedial, professional or vocational courses.
Four Basic Subjects
[1] Written Communication,
[2] Oral Communication,
[3] Critical Thinking / Logic,
[4] College level Math / Quantitative Reasoning
A grade of C or better is required for each course which must be completed by:
Spring term prior to Fall admission or Fall term prior to Spring admission.
English Proficiency
Please refer to the above English Proficiency Requirement section for details.

GPA
[1] GPA minimum is 2.40.
[2] Must be in good standing at last institution.

Graduate Requirements

Graduate applicants must meet all of the following requirements for admission consideration.
[1] Must possess a four-year bachelor's degree (or its equivalent in U.S. terms) from a recognized institution of higher education.
[2] Be in good academic standing at the last college or university attended;
[3] Applicants must have attained a minimum 2.5 grade point average (A=4.0) in the last 90 quarter units (60 semester units) attempted.
[4] All degree equivalencies and grade point average calculations are determined by the Office of Admission and Recruitment.

Admission to the graduate programs is a two-step process. In addition to the above requirements, applicants must check with their major programs for additional requirements, including major program application deadline and additional documents.

Notes:
[1] We will use copies of overseas records to evaluate applications. If you are admitted, you will be informed on your GET To-Do-List regarding obtaining official transcripts. Transcripts from any U.S. institution must be official.
[2] Freshman applicants: Your academic record must include first term of the 12th grade.
[3] Graduate applicants:  You must check with your CSULA major department for additional documents to be sent to the department. You must Prepare two sets of records from each college attended.

AFFIDAVIT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT

[1] Your application will not be processed without this form.
[2] Downloaded the form here.
[3] Original bank documents and/ or award letter are required. If these documents are written in another language, you must include a certified English translation with the original bank document.
[4] Only liquid assets will be acceptable. Funds from retirement or investment accounts will not be considered.
[5] Original signature from your sponsor is required.
[6] Attach a copy of your passport (biographical page only) to the form.
[7] To convert your country’s currency into U.S. dollars, we will use the exchange rate on the date documents are received by the University. However, please note that the U.S. Embassy or Consulate may not accept the conversion that was used to calculate the funds for the I-20. They may determine that the exchange rate has changed too drastically and may require you to show additional sources of funding. And should the exchange rate drop prior to or during your studies at CSULA, you are still responsible for the full cost of tuition and living expenses. You will be responsible of finding alternative sources of funding to cover the cost of your education at CSULA.
