Academic Programs

Academic ProgramsThe Division of Extended Education is pleased to collaborate with CSU Los Angeles’ renowned School of Music in offering three innovative academic programs:
the Orff Schulwerk Certification Program (music education), the Summer Choral Music Festival  (music performance), and the Three-Summer Master of Music in Choral Conducting  (choral conducting).

The Orff Schulwerk program, based on pedagogy employing Carl Orff’s music coupled with movement, provides music educators with a curriculum for teaching music through active music-making.  This may include singing, movement, instrumental ensemble playing, and use of special instruments.  Special topics include multicultural music traditions, folk dance, and storytelling.

The Summer Choral Festival provides singers and conductors an intensive week-long session of classes, rehearsals, guest lectures, and coaching sessions leading to a Saturday evening choral performance.  A guest composer is often featured in residence.

Finally, by attending three seven-week summer residency sessions, a student may qualify for the Summer Master of Music degree, equivalent to the Masters of Music (Choral Conducting) degree offered by the Department of Music and accredited through the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).  Each intensive summer session prepares the student in areas of:  choral pedagogy, performance practice, and applied vocal/choral training.  One week of the program corresponds with Summer Choral Festival week.  Note: at least 12-quarter units from an accredited university, or from a regular quarter at Cal State LA, are also required to complete this degree).
