This course is designed to prepare the student for medical-field work as a medical interpreter in either an inpatient or outpatient setting and also for students who need to pass the state medical interpreting exam. It introduces students to the fundamental techniques and practice of medical translation and interpreting, English/Spanish, Spanish/English, including consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation.
Basic medical vocabulary in English and Spanish is presented, and grammatical and syntactical differences between the two languages are emphasized. Written and oral practice and reading comprehension exercises with medical vocabulary are included.
