The UNIX operating system was developed in the mid-1970s when minicomputers and mainframe computers were the norm in the corporate world. It has since become a very popular operating system and can run on computers ranging from PCs to mainframes. Today, many computer users and programmers work in the UNIX or UNIX-like environments to run offices or develop software. UNIX machines are also used widely as Web severs in the Internet world and routers in computer networks. The result is that the demand for UNIX programmers and system administrators is growing quickly.
After completing this program, students have the technical knowledge, skills, and experience to increase productivity and competitiveness in their jobs. In addition, the program offers a low-cost preparation for students who want to take the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam.
Admission Requirements
A high school diploma and experience working with computers and computer programming.
Certificate Requirements
This program consists of six required courses. Five of the courses are offered through Extended Education and one course is offered through the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Non-matriculated students may take this course through Open University.
