Program Description
The textile and apparel industry in Southern California employs approximately 128,000 people in all aspects of design, product development, manufacturing and marketing. This industry is highly sophisticated and includes fashion and market research, brand licensing, intellectual property rights, design, materials, engineering, product manufacturing, marketing and distribution.
The competitive advantage of the Los Angeles textile industry is in design flexibility, quick response, and the ability to diversify product lines. The textiles industry, includes fabric development, manufacturing, dyeing, printing and finishing. The markets served by the textile industry include fashion apparel, outdoor and active wear, and industrial uses. The textile industry also impacts industries such as home furnishings, furniture, toys, entertainment, and costuming.
This certificate program offers working professionals in the textile industry a coordinated series of courses for professional education and career enhancement. It is directed toward people in the textile industry who desire to increase their knowledge of their industry in order to advance their careers. Completion of this certificate program will help to fill the need for training resources for technical and management personnel in the textile industry and related industries.

Program Objectives
- Provide an opportunity for students to acquire high-demand job skills for their future employment.
- Provide an opportunity for professional job retraining.
- Provide a textile education in an industry of high demand in the Los Angeles region.
- Enhance the course offerings for textile production and management to provide a fully developed certificate program for comprehensive training.
Target Participants
This certificate program is valuable for working professionals who desire to increase their knowledge of their industry in order to advance their careers. This includes:
- Individuals interested in increasing knowledge in fabric design and knit constructions.
- Individuals interested in increasing knowledge of dyeing and finishing.
- Individuals interested in understanding the job skills for necessary textile plant management and production.
- Individuals interested in understanding the environmental and trade issues.
Admission Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent education and two years experience in the textile and/or apparel industry or referral from present employer. English comprehension required.
Certificate Requirements (10 CEUs)
The program consists of fourteen courses, five of which are required and nine that are electives. All of the courses will be offered through the Division of Extended Education for a total of 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Courses not applicable for academic credit or transfer.
Upon completion of the five required courses and four electives, the participant will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by the Division of Extended Education. Those who elect to take only individual courses will receive a Letter of Completion from the Division of Extended Education for each course taken, upon request.
