Certificate programs are groups of classes that provide in-depth study in particular subject areas. Each program undergoes continuous review to ensure that it teaches the knowledge and skills required by the industry. A complete list of programs appears on the left side of this screen. Some certificate programs are offered soley by Extended Education; others are offered in partnership with academic units on campus. All of the programs listed on the left have been approved by the Academic Senate of Cal State L.A.
Entrance Requirements for the programs vary from a high school diploma to a college degree. Some programs require entrance examinations; a few require application fees. Most certificate programs involve at least 24 units of study. Successful completiongenerally requires a GPA of at least 2.5 and earns a certificate for the student.

How do I enroll in a certificate program?

How are certificate programs created?
Each program is created by university faculty, corporate executives, and industry leaders who contribute their experience and expertise as advisory board members.
Who are the instructors?
Certificate programs are taught by faculty members and practicing professionals chosen for their experience in and access to the latest developments in their fields.
How long does it take to earn a certificate?
The length of certificate programs varies. Some can be completed in a year; others may take longer. No program takes longer than 2.5 years.
May I take just one class from a certificate program?
Most classes can be taken individually or as part of the overall program.
Do certificate programs award academic credit?
Yes, many of them do, including the programs in Alcohol and Drug Problems Specialist, Applied Gerontology, Biotechnology, and Business Management. The list on the left side of this screen contains
many more. Programs that do not award academic credit award CEUs instead.
What are CEUs?
CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are nationally recognized units of credit used to measure college-level studies that do not offer academic credit. CEUs are widely recognized by employers,
relicensing agencies and other groups that require a specific number of hours of instruction for career advancement. If a course awards CEUs, it will list the number of units it awards.
Online Computer Courses!
Take a course that's convenient for you. No traffic hassles, no parking problems, no lines to stand in! Work and learn at your own pace! As part of the Extension courses, the online courses cover a broad range of subjects, including business, computers, music, art, english, science, and mathematics. Some earn academic credit. Others earn either no credit or Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Visit our "virtual classroom" online to discuss your questions and work at your own pace. You must have access to a modern Windows computer, an up-to-date version of Netscape or Internet Explorer, and an Internet connection.
CalStateTEACH is a CSU alternative teacher preparation program for elementary school teachers, who already hold classroom teaching positions. It is a multiple subject credential program with CLAD. Instead of traditional classes, students use Internet, print and video resources. Participants attend five Saturday seminars. Upon completion of the four-stage 18-month program, participants will earn from 39 to 42 semester units. New students may enroll in January or September. Applications are accepted year-round, with deadlines occurring prior to each program start date. Prerequisites include a bachelor's degree and CBEST.
