The College of Natural and Social Sciences presented the inaugural Pérez-Silverman Endowed Symposium,
"Understanding Health Determinants and Promoting Equitable Healthcare Access."

The symposium featured a diverse panel of distinguished health industry professionals, reflective of our student body, who discussed critical issues affecting equitable healthcare access in the community.

Isabel Chen
Isabel Chen, M.D., M.P.H. – Assistant Professor, Department of Health Systems Science, Kaiser School of Medicine

Dr. Chen founded two non-profit organizations dedicated to addressing social needs in the community and has served on the board of directors of other non-profit organizations, including the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine, the California Association of Family Physicians, and the Beyond Flexner Alliance. In addition to her role at KPTSOM, she holds adjunct faculty appointments at George Washington (GW) University Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine. 

Leslie Goodyear-Moya
Leslie Goodyear-Moya ’09, M.B.A., M.A. – Senior Cultural and Linguistic Services Specialist, Health Net

A Cal State LA geosciences and environment (geography) department alum, Leslie Goodyear-Moya has been working to improve health in communities over the last ten years.  Her education in geographic measurement created a foundation and framework of understanding of how place impacts the human experience. Goodyear-Moya has been working to increase the application of place-based thinking in quality improvement strategies by evaluating both health outcomes and solutions by place.  Goodyear-Moya is the co-founder of LibraryFam, a nascent organization dedicated to fundraising for libraries in the Boyle Heights neighborhood with the long-term goal of supporting libraries in under-resourced communities in Los Angeles County. She earned her M.B.A. from the Marshall School of Business at USC. 

Artair Rogers
Artair Rogers, MS – CA Director of Programs, Health Leads

At Health Leads, Rogers constructs technical assistance tools focused on elements of social needs interventions for health care systems and leads the development of community-engagement work. Before Health Leads, he served as a senior consultant for Kaiser Permanente. He received his undergraduate degree in sociology and public policy leadership from the University of Mississippi, and his master’s degree in health systems administration from Georgetown University.

Efrain Talamantes
Efrain Talamantes, M.D., M.B.A., M.Sc. – Chief Operating Officer, Health Services

In July 2020, Dr. Efrain Talamantes was named Chief Operating Officer of Health Services at AltaMed. For the two years, he served as medical director for the AltaMed Institute for Health Equity (AIHE) and Medical Education, leading health services and community-partnered research and training to advance health equity and medical education at AltaMed. Under Dr. Talamantes’ leadership, the Institute received Patient-Centered Outcomes Research funding, enabling a community partnership that has informed AltaMed’s research priorities. Dr. Talamantes also serves as the inaugural Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) for the AltaMed Graduate Medical Education Committee and as a member of AltaMed’s Executive Governance Leadership Committee. Dr. Talamantes received his Bachelor of Science in psychobiology at UCLA, and a medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and obtained a master’s degree in business administration at the Emory Goizueta School of Business. He subsequently completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at UC Davis.

Jorge Orozco
Jorge Orozco, M.S., - Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center

Jorge Orozco was recently appointed as CEO at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center, one of the largest and most complex hospitals in this country, dedicated to providing world-class care for all.  Prior to his recent appointment, he led Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center as the Chief Executive Officer since 2007.  Mr. Orozco began his career as a physical therapist in 1988 and continues to practice at LAC+USC as a Board Certified Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy.

Mr. Orozco earned his master’s degree in health care management from California State University, Los Angeles, a physical therapy degree from the University of California at San Francisco, and a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
