Teacher Preparation Advisement Center

Teacher Preparation Advisement Center
The Teacher Preparation Advisement Center (TPAC) is part of the Charter College of Education. TPAC was created to give undergraduate students in-school field experience to help them decide if the teaching profession is the right career path.
TPAC is responsible for the coordination of the early field experience component of the undergraduate teacher preparation program courses. TPAC assists and advises students on the clearances required and mandated by the State of California and Cal State L.A. for field experience; and ensures that students are placed in qualified schools with credentialed teachers in the subject matter related to the University course.
Clearance Requirements for Early Field Experience
To participate in the Early Field Experience component of your course, you must get a Certificate of Clearance from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). This involves a two-step process: Live Scan and Direct Application with the CCTC.
1. Live Scan Fingerprinting
A Live Scan is a thorough background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) & Department of Justice (DOJ).
What do you need?
  • Live Scan Application 41LS Form. You can pick up an application at the TPAC office (KHD137) or online http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/41-ls.pdf
  • A valid California Driver’s License or California State ID or US passport
  • Fee for Cal State L.A. location is $61 (Fee breakdown for Cal State L.A.: $32 DOJ, $17 FBI, and $12 student fee). You may pay with check, money order, Visa or MasterCard.
Live Scan Locations
Unfortunately, a Live Scan is NOT interchangeable from agency to agency.  If you have taken a previous Live Scan for employment or at any other agency where the results were not sent to the CCTC, then you must retake the Live Scan.
Keep in mind you will never hear back from the Live Scan location.
2. Certificate of Clearance
Once you receive the Certificate of Clearance from the CCTC it is valid for five years.
Online Application
Tips for completing the online application
  • CCTC is currently not compatible with Safari for Mac.  You will need to use another browser, such as Google Chrome.
  • Your pop-up blocker must be turned off to allow the payment screen to open.

Notes regarding the Certificate of Clearance

  • Applications may be delayed by fingerprint card processing or Division of Professional Practices review.
  • You can check the status of your application by visiting the Online Services for Educator Page. For instructions on how to check the status of your application, please visit http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/online-services/pdf/profile-status-tips.pdf
  • Your receipt is NOT your Certificate of Clearance.
  • You will NOT be allowed to participate in any off-site school field experience without your Certificate of Clearance.
