Sami Alhayyan | ELP'12
Sami Alhyaan, now a senior at Cal State LA majoring in Mechanical Engineering, is proud to be participating in the EcoCAR 3 collegiate engineering competition sponsored by General Motors.
As part of the competition, he and his team will be converting the Chevrolet Camaro into a Hybrid vehicle in an effort to reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining consumer acceptability, performance, utility and safety. He is grateful to have studied with the English Language Program (ELP) when he began his study abroad experience because it helped him build a good foundation for his studies while helping him overcome language barriers.
“The ELP not only helped me improve my English, but it also gave me guidance to improve my academic performance as a U.S. college student” Sami said. “Grammar, writing and speaking were my favorite courses. The teachers incorporate games which makes classes more engaging and interactive. I had lots of fun playing the game ‘Charades’, but also learned how to write an essay without grammatical and formatting mistakes.”
Sami recalls that his writing instructor taught students how to write an article in order to prepare them for academic life.
"After class, our instructor would bring us to the library and show us how to find resources for the articles. I then applied these research techniques I learned from the ELP to my undergraduate assignments."
Outside of class, the most memorable aspect of the ELP for Sami were the field trips.
"We took the shuttle bus to the Griffith Observatory during my first quarter. During my program, we also went to the Santa Monica Pier and Los Angeles museums. I really enjoyed every field trip during my English studies.”
