About the English Language Program

The curriculum of the English Language Program (ELP) at Cal State LA includes instruction in grammar, writing, reading, listening, speaking and academic preparation. More information :

  • There are six pre-academic proficiency levels. Level One is the entry level. Level Six is the highest level.

  • In addition, there are four co-academic levels, that enable students to enroll in both university credit courses and ELP courses during the same term.

  • Classes average in size between 12 and 18 students.

  • The program provides a full course of pre-academic study that consists of at least 18 hours of classroom instruction per week during each academic term.

  • This skills-based program prepares language learners to meet and surpass the minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) scores required for admission to California State University, Los Angeles, and other colleges and universities.

  • At the beginning of each academic term, students receive an on-site student orientation, during which members of our staff explain the content and expectations of the language program, conversation practice opportunities, rules and regulations, accommodation services, local transportation, school policies, and student responsibilities.

  • Each student receives an official Cal State LA Student Identification Card, a computer access login, and an email account.

  • Performance reports with letter grades are issued to students at the end of each academic quarter, and a Certificate of Participation is awarded after successful completion of all requirements of the program.

  • Students have free access to the Kennedy Library, Writing Center, University Student Union, conversation clubs, computer labs, Wi-Fi access, gym workout facilities, basketball and tennis courts, and two heated swimming pools.

  • Students also have opportunities to experience cultural events and socials outside the classroom, resulting in opportunities to meet others in the program and spend time together.
